Lawnifi™ is the consumer products division of AmpAgronomy™ (ampagronomy.com), which supplies sod farms, golf courses, and commercial contractors with our fertilizer technology to grow and maintain their turfgrass and crops. The benefits of our program include our Catalyst™ Particle Reduction Technology, which breaks down the size of our nutrients so that the plant can directly intake and use the product from both the leaf blade and root zone without wasting energy from breaking them down. This process also uses a manufacturing technique called chelation that bonds our nutrients in a way that prevents nutrient lock up in the soil. We bond these nutrients with carbon, which has an added benefit of helping to feed and grow microbe populations in the soil. Microbes are important because they naturally produce nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous, and also help develop good soil structure and help prevent compaction. All of these processes combined set our product apart and are readily evident when you use them on your lawn in root density, health, and appearance.

Recover™ – Use monthly during the hot summer months and spot spray as needed to help repair areas of the lawn that are struggling. This is our most nutrient-rich formulation to aid with soil structure and give the plant the best chance in recovery. Have a soil test completed when starting the program and at least every other year after that to make sure your pH levels are appropriate for your grass type. Make amendments as necessary. Your local public university or extension office offers this service for a nominal fee and does a great job! Just google “Soil Test (State Name)” and select the link from your local public university. You will provide them with a few bags of soil from your yard and receive a detailed report with your nutrient levels and recommended remedies.
We also highly recommend preventative applications of both fungicide and insecticide to minimize the risk of both fungus and disease. Preventative applications are very low-dose compared to curative applications required after you have a problem. Amazon and other big box stores offer lots of options. We strongly recommend using a systemic fungicide and season long grub-control to compliment our fertilization program.
Both Bluegrass and Tall Fescure grass types like to be loaded up with nitrogen in the fall around November as they prepare for winter. Adding this application will ensure spring-time success. DO NOT DO THIS FOR WARM SEASON GRASS TYPES SUCH AS BERMUDA, CENTIPEDE, ZOYSIA, or ST. AUGUSTINE!
If the spots are circular, in patterns, or have grown outward from a central location, this is likely fungus, disease, or insect damage. Read this article from our Sod University blog: Lawn Fungus ID & Treatment. Fungus and disease thrive when thatch and moisture are constantly present. To minimize the risk, avoid overwatering your lawn and mow regularly. Thatch removal in the spring with a rake or low mowing will also help. If insects are the issue, a “soap test” will let you know. The most common sign of insect damage is the appearance of chewed up leaves.
Brown spots can also be caused by pets who walk and run over the same area frequently or can occur in areas where irrigation does not reach. These will typically be irregularly shaped or trail-like. Apply Recover™ to these areas to help with recovery. Allowing the plant to have a break from high traffic and wear during the recovery period is essential! Different turfgrass species handle traffic at different levels. Constant and heavy traffic will thin and eventually kill any plant regardless of the fertilization and water applied.
Brown spots caused by under watering will be evident by a curled leaf of the turfgrass plant and very dry or dusty soil down approximately two inches. Apply water to the plant until the soil is moist and you will see the leaf open back up within 12 hours. Less frequent deep watering will encourage your lawn to grow deep roots whereas frequent shallow watering will train your lawn to need more water and keep a shallow root system. If you do not see the area recovering after applying water, it is unlikely that under watering is the cause of the issue. See the section on fungus, disease, and insect damage above for other clues.
The final common cause of brown spots is excessive shade. All turfgrasses love the full sun, but some varieties and cultivars do better in shade than others such as St. Augustine in warm season climates and Fescue in cool season climates. Our Recover™ product has amino acids that are sometimes referred to as “liquid sunshine” because they can help grass function better in shady situations. However some areas of a landscape are best to be either natural or mulched if there is not enough sunlight to allow the grass to survive (typically 4+ hours per day at a minimum). Keep in mind that areas of shade are prone to excessive moisture since the water will not evaporate as fast and the temperatures can be cooler. This is an excellent formula for fungus and disease, so be sure to watch these areas! Shady areas are also usually near trees, which compete for the same nutrients as turfgrass. This can cause issues.
